Round 17 and 18 of the 2016 Pirelli World Challenge Porsche GT Cup Championship
The Pirelli World Challenge at the Sonoma Grand Prix
Sloan Urry, #20 SecurityNational Mortgage/Avasis/Porsche 991
September 18, 2016
Sloan Urry and the TruSpeed Autosport scored another pair of second place finishes at Sonoma. The weekend started with foggy, cool mornings and comfortable afternoon temperatures. These conditions lead to track conditions which complement the handling behavior of Sloan’s Porsche 991. He had a great car and qualifying session Saturday morning, and very narrowly missed the pole position. Saturday afternoon and Sunday, the temperatures soared to the mid 90-degree mark and so did the track temperatures. The track temperatures were over 115 degrees by race time Saturday and even hotter on Sunday, which changed the track’s grip levels immensely.
Sloan and his engineer made multiple changes to the car to accommodate the track which was similar to an ice rink with steep hills, fast downhills and tight turns, but it wasn’t enough to fight for the victory. Sloan’s car was extremely loose under these conditions and he did a great job to challenge for the win and still bring his car home in perfect condition. There was a great crowd at Sonoma Raceway, but more importantly for Sloan, he was honored to celebrate two podium finishes with West Coast representatives from SecurityNational Mortgage and AVASIS.

Sloan on Race One: “TruSpeed gave me a great car for qualifying. In fact, it was so good, we didn’t make any changes to it anticipating it would be a great car for the race. Half way through the race, it was survival mode. The temperatures were much, much hotter and the car was loose everywhere. I was pushing Alec as hard as I could, trying to get him to make a mistake, but he did a great job. I could see he was fighting the same issues as well. I think everyone was.”
Sloan on Race Two: “Not a bad finish, we were second again, but not where I want to be. For the championship we need to be winning, pretty much every race by now. We made a lot of changes to the car overnight and the car was still a handful out there. We’re missing something with the behavior of the car in these hot conditions. I am frustrated but always optimistic for the next event. I want to thank all of the guests from SecurityNational Mortgage and AVASIS that were here today. It’s always extra special when my partners are here.”
